Some rhubarb is stewed and ready to sample tonight. The gardens are tilled, albeit a tad on the wet side. There are mallards nesting in the yard and the mower has had a few good workouts.
Chicken eggs are set in the incubator and the first crop of juvenile song birds are at the feeder. The forest is brilliant green with the new gloss still on the aspen. The smell is wild and exotic.
Another growing season has begun. One more precious spring to welcome.

ReplyDeleteYou have many options. I have a dedicated back yard flock of mutts with that ever so attractive hybrid vigour, I have a wild man south of me that has a plethora to choose from and then you can scout birds from Bergs.
If you want to go crazy with choice Murray McMurray is your best bet. They kill you to ship to Canada, but one can always have them delivered south of the line and run down to pick them up if you have the right papers. I have details if you need.
Cute birds are fun, but it's difficult to beat the commercial leghorns. They are darn tough and lay like the dickens. If you get chicks this year, you might have a few eggs by late fall, but next spring you'll be in business. If you can find layers to buy that are already on line, that would be good too, but likely expensive and questionable. How would you know if they are laying and even if you check their vents sometimes a move will toss them off their game for a while. Incredibly efficient beasts at any rate.
There's a small animal sale at the auction mart in Grunthal once a month. That might yield some smart buys. It's usually a fun time irrespective of any purchases.
We had kids out on Monday and one spent some time cuddling one of the layers. Too cute for words. Much like this only the current model year.
